Ancient healing in a modern world

What is Ayurveda
Ayurveda is an ancient healing system from India that is said to have originated 6000 years ago. It uses natural laws of nature to help a person live a long, health & happy life. Unlike western medicine it treats the root cause and not the condition. Ayurveda uses a truly holistic approach providing guidance on the best diet, lifestyle, daily routine, seasonal routine, natural supplements, therapies, yoga, meditation for your individual constitution.
In India and throughout South Asia, Ayurvedic medicine is taught in universities and medical colleges on an equal footing with western medicine, and qualifications for the practice of both disciplines are virtually identical.
It really is all about balance, Ayurveda helps you recognise when there is an imbalance in your body and gives natural tools to bring yourself back into balance.
Think of it as a holistic science which believes in the unity of the body, mind, soul so being ill in one area can affect another. For example – we know stress (mind) can cause an ulcer (body), if the ulcer persists and becomes debilitating can cause despair or depression (soul).
As an Ayurvedic practitioner I appreciate that everyone is unique and as a result, lifestyle and wellness counselling is based on what right for you and your body type in accordance with the principles of Ayurveda.
Ayurveda is based on the three Doshas (body-mind types: vata, pitta, kapha) which reside in our bodies in varying degrees. When a person is in a healthy state, these doshas are balanced in a natural harmony within our bodies. In order to understand our natural healthy state of being, we must first understand our original body-type (prakriti) and current body-type (vikriti) and thus see the imbalances. The Ayurveda approach does not treat a disease but the underlining doshic imbalances in the various tissues (dhatus) and channels (srotras).
In Ayurveda, the emphasis is always on treating an individual rather than simply treating a disease state so every treatment program will look slightly different depending on each person's unique situation.
